Environmental Audit (EA) for Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA)

Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) is Tanzania’s largest, busiest, and primary international airport. ROM conducted a comprehensive environmental and social audit for the facility to assess its compliance with local regulations and international best practices, such as those set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The project, delivered to the satisfaction of the client; the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) – resulted in JNIA receiving an Environmental Audit Certificate from the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) in 2022.

ROM mobilized a team of specialists to conduct a range of services, including baseline investigations in areas such as air quality, noise and vibrations, hydrology, social surveys, and fauna and flora inventories. Expertise was further provided in water quality, aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity, and cumulative impact assessments. Stakeholder engagement was a key component of the project, with consultations held to gather input from local communities, government agencies, and environmental organizations to address concerns and ensure transparent communication.

The audit also assessed the airport’s existing sustainability initiatives, including waste reduction, recycling programs, and energy-efficient technologies, and provided recommendations for enhancing these efforts. Additionally, strategies were developed to mitigate identified risks and impacts, ensuring the airport’s operations aligned with best practices in environmental stewardship. The final comprehensive report outlined findings and actionable recommendations to improve JNIA’s environmental and social performance.
